45.6 Tons of Garbage Lifted from Kalimati Muncar, Estuary Still Blocked by Shipwrecks
The Banyuwangi Waterworks Public Works Department has brought in heavy equipment to support handling sedimentation in the area.
Apart from sediment deposits, there are dozens of abandoned fishing boat wrecks. Bayu said the presence of these ships hampered the flow of water in and out during high tide.
The wreck is planned for transportation. However, until this information is submitted, the process is still at the inventory stage.
"Because the language of cleaning up is not just the rubbish, it turns out the source of the problem is that the sediment must be removed, and the shipwrecks must also be cleaned up," said Bayu.
Thus, the amount of waste that has been collected does not reflect all the work that must be completed in Kalimati. Estuary management still includes other materials that impede water flow.
River Watch installs rubbish barriers
In the midst of the cleanup, the environmental organization Sungai Watch has installed trash barriers in the river flow.
