Earth Line Fact Check Standard

Guidelines for information verification and news correction

GARIS BUMI is committed to presenting information that is accurate, verified, balanced and accountable. Every piece of information is checked through a journalistic process by paying attention to the Journalistic Code of Ethics, Cyber Media Reporting Guidelines, and applicable laws and regulations.

1. Fact Check Principle

The implementation of the EARTH LINE fact check is guided by the following principles.

• Accurate and evidence-based.

• Independent from political, economic, group or personal interests.

• Be balanced and provide room for confirmation to related parties.

• Be transparent in stating sources and examination methods.

• Prioritize the public interest.

• Be open to corrections and updates.

2. Information Examined

Fact checks are carried out on information that meets one or more of the following criteria.

• Widely circulated and has the potential to influence society.

• Relating to the environment, energy, green economy, technology, lifestyle, disasters and other public issues.

• Contain claims that can be proven to be true.

• Suspected to be false, misleading, manipulated, or missing context.

• Potential to cause panic, conflict, discrimination, loss, or threat to public safety.

Opinions, personal beliefs, predictions, humor, and satire are not treated as claims of fact, unless presented in a manner that could mislead the public.

3. Claim Selection

Editors select claims based on the level of public interest, reach of distribution, potential impact, availability of evidence, and the possibility of the claim being objectively verified.

The selection of claims is not based on partiality towards certain figures, organizations, companies, governments, political parties or groups.

4. Verification Source

Examinations are carried out using relevant and accountable sources, including:

• Official documents and data.

• Legislation.

• Research reports and scientific publications.

• Information from the authorized agency.

• Interviews with competent sources.

• Expert information according to the field.

• Primary sources and direct witnesses.

• Trusted archive of news and documentation.

• Verifiable photos, videos, sound recordings, maps and digital data.

The editorial team prioritizes primary sources. Information from social media is not used as the sole basis for establishing the veracity of a claim.

5. Inspection Process

Fact checking is carried out through the following stages.

1. Identify the main claim.

2. Trace the initial source and context of the information.

3. Collect documents, data and supporting evidence.

4. Compare information with independent sources.

5. Check the time, place, identity, number and context of the event.

6. Contact the claim maker or related parties.

7. Ask for expert explanation if necessary.

8. Draw conclusions based on available evidence.

9. Perform final editing and checking before publication.

6. Photo and Video Inspection

To check the authenticity of a photo or video, the editor can take the following steps.

• Browse source and first upload.

• Perform a reverse image search.

• Check metadata if available.

• Compare locations, weather, buildings, street signs, and other visual elements.

• Check for possible editing or manipulation.

• Confirm with the owner, manufacturer, witnesses, or authorities.

• Use relevant digital verification tools.

The editor will explain if digital evidence is not sufficient to ensure the authenticity of the material.

7. Use of Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence technology can be used as a search, transcription, translation or initial analysis tool. However, fact check conclusions are not determined solely based on artificial intelligence results.

Each finding remains checked by the editorial team using sources, evidence and journalistic considerations.

8. Confirmation and Right of Reply

The party who is the subject of the examination will be given a reasonable opportunity to provide an explanation or response.

If a response has not been received by the publication deadline, the editorial team can publish the results of the examination by explaining that confirmation efforts have been made. Responses received after publication may be added as updates.

9. Classification of Fact Check Results

• Correct: The claim is supported by evidence and verifiable sources.

• Partially True: Some of the information is factual, but there are elements that are incorrect or missing context.

• Misleading: Contains certain facts, but is conveyed with context, titles, images, or conclusions that can give rise to mistaken understanding.

• False: The claim is contradicted by verifiable evidence.

• Manipulated Content: Photos, videos, sounds, documents or data have been altered to produce an impression that does not correspond to the actual situation.

• Insufficient Evidence: The available evidence is insufficient to establish the claim as true or false.

Each conclusion must be accompanied by reasons and evidence that the reader can understand.

10. Anonymous Source

Anonymous sources are only used if the information is of public interest, the source's identity needs to be protected, and the information has been verified through other sources or evidence.

The identity of the source must be known by the editor. Anonymous sources are not used to convey accusations without adequate evidentiary support.

11. Conflict of Interest

Editorial members who have personal, organizational, political, employment or economic interests with the claims being examined are required to convey these conditions to the editorial team and are not involved in drawing conclusions.

Commercial collaborations should not influence claim selection, vetting processes and fact-check results.

12. Corrections and Updates

LINE EARTH will openly correct errors if errors are found in fact-check articles. Corrections are made using the following steps.

• Correct the wrong part.

• Add correction or update information.

• Explain what parts were changed and why.

• Includes update time.

• Maintaining the content of articles remains accountable.

Changes that affect the conclusions will be clearly explained to the reader.

13. Reader Participation

• Links or screenshots of information.

• The claim you want to examine.
