Yogyakarta Handles 870 Kg of Residual Plastic Waste per Day through Jumilah Joss Tenan
YOGYAKARTA, GARISBUMI.com – The Yogyakarta City Government handles around 870 kilograms of residual plastic waste per day through the Jumilah Joss Tenan program. This program, which reaches 45 sub-districts, prioritizes sorting from the source to reduce waste entering the depot.
Head of the Capacity Development and Environmental Supervision Division of the Yogyakarta City Environmental Service (DLH), Supriyanto, said that waste is sorted based on type before being directed to the appropriate processing process.
"What usually fills the depot, we sort this residual plastic waste from upstream. After sorting, we then process it through pyrolysis," said Supriyanto in Patangpuluhan Village, Tuesday (13/10/2026).
He explained that pyrolysis is a material processing process through heating under certain conditions to produce products that have useful value. Through this approach, residual plastic waste is transformed into more useful materials.
Jumilah Joss Tenan is an acronym for Jogja Sorting Waste, Jogja Sorting for the Source, Integrated and Sustainable. The implementation involves the community, business actors, and special officers called waste sorters or Jumilah.
One of the targets of this program is food stalls. According to Supriyanto, this business activity produces quite large amounts of residual plastic waste every day so it is necessary to be involved in sorting it from the source.
Jumilah officers help sort waste more specifically while connecting the waste source with the processing system that has been prepared. Pickup of residual plastic waste is carried out in stages.
