UAD Students Initiate MAMBO to Prevent Food Waste, Win FOMUNY 2026
YOGYAKARTA, GARISBUMI.com – Three Ahmad Dahlan University (UAD) students initiated MAMBO, a digital platform designed to handle surplus food from restaurants, hotels and retail before it becomes food waste. This idea led them to win first place in the 2026 FOMUNY Writing Contest.
The national level essay competition was held by the Family of Students (FOMUNY) of Yogyakarta State University (UNY) on 12–13 September 2026 at the UNY campus, Special Region of Yogyakarta.
The UAD team consists of Mohd Haisyam as chairman, and Shofiana Nur Zahrowati and Dio Lutvi Andre as members. The three of them raised the use of technology and digital systems to answer the problem of food surplus and food waste.
MAMBO is Designed to Handle Food Surplus
MAMBO was initiated as a digital ecosystem that integrates food surplus predictions, quality control through a HACCP-lite approach, food redistribution, and a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) based methane emissions calculator.
Through this design, the team seeks to present an approach that links handling excess food with reducing environmental impacts. This idea is part of the theme of transforming sustainable consumption and production through innovation, education and collaboration with the younger generation.
The three students have different scientific backgrounds. These differences help them examine problems from an environmental, social, technological and health perspective to develop solutions that can be developed further.
MAMBO is still an idea that needs to be finalized. The team hopes that the design can develop into a platform that can be implemented and provide benefits to society and the environment.
