The Neuwiedia Veratrifolia Orchid is Still Found in Bawean during the Dry Season

BAWEAN, GARISBUMI.com – Neuwiedia veratrifolia orchids are still found in the Gunung Besar Block, Bawean Island, amidst forest conditions that are starting to dry out. Patrols from the East Java Natural Resources Conservation Center (BBKSDA Jatim) also found an active spring with signs of wildlife activity in the surrounding area.

This finding was recorded by the KSDA Region 09 Gresik–Bawean Smart Patrol Resort Team when reviewing the location of the orchid, Friday (9/10/2026). Monitoring is carried out to see the condition of plants and their habitat after changing seasons.

The team found Neuwiedia veratrifolia at the previous observation location and the surrounding area. Some individuals appear dry, while traces of inflorescences that have fallen off are still visible.

The existence of these orchids is an important note for further monitoring. Although they can still be found, the drying condition of a number of individuals indicates the need for regular observations of the plants and the environment in which they live.

Springs are a place for animals to use water

During the search, the team also found springs that remained active even though the area was quite dry. The flow is small and forms puddles on some parts of the forest floor.

Around the water source, the team recorded signs of wildlife activity, including Bawean Deer and Bawean Warty Pigs. These signs indicate that this location is being used by animals in dry conditions.

The discovery of springs completes information about the habitat on Mount Besar. Apart from recording the presence of orchids, patrols also provide an overview of water sources and animal activity in the surrounding area.
