Tangerang Waste Dominates Food Waste, Reduction Starts in the Kitchen
GARISBUMI.com – TANGERANG, GARISBUMI.COM | Food waste contributed 57.65 percent of the waste composition recorded in Tangerang City, according to data from the National Waste Management Information System (SIPSN) quoted by the local Environmental Service (DLH). This large portion makes the habit of managing food at home an important part of reducing waste.
The steps start before the food is thrown away: planning shopping, storing food properly, and taking adequate portions. For the remaining organic materials that are still produced, sorting and composting are the processing options at home.
Head of DLH Tangerang City, Yudi Pradana, said that discarded food waste mixed with other waste makes it difficult to sort and can cause odors.
Organic waste can also produce methane gas when it decomposes in conditions of minimal oxygen at the final processing site (TPA), according to Yudi in a statement delivered Tuesday (27/10/2026).
"This data is an important reminder for the public to start changing habits in managing waste, especially food waste from the kitchen," he said, as quoted by the Tangerang City Communication and Information Department.
This statement does not include the year the SIPSN data was recorded or the total waste tonnage which is the basis for the percentage of 57.65 percent. This figure shows the portion of food waste in the composition of recorded waste, not the percentage of waste that comes entirely from households.
Prevent food from being wasted, separate the rest
