Trap Camera Recorded Two Tapirs in Mesuji, Habitat Protection Strengthened
Camera Trap Points Will Be Added
Bengkulu BKSDA is encouraging the addition of camera trap points so that data regarding the distribution, habitat use and population potential of tapirs in Mesuji is more representative.
Collaborative patrols will also be increased, especially in locations that have been identified as habitats and movement routes for animals. The patrol involved BKSDA, PT Silva Inhutani, Mesuji Regency Government, and other related parties.
The commitment to animal protection was strengthened through coordination with the KSDA Region III Lampung Section with the management of PT Silva Inhutani Lampung on 2 to 3 September 2026.
During the meeting, the company stated that it would form and train a Wildlife Conflict Task Force according to BKSDA's direction. The company also agreed to reinstall camera traps at a number of different points.
“We appreciate PT Silva Inhutani's commitment to forming and training a Wildlife Conflict Task Force and continuing to install camera traps in different locations,” said Agung.
According to him, collaboration between the government, companies, local governments, academics and the community is the key to protecting animal habitats while preventing conflicts between humans and wild animals.
Management of HCV areas is not only directed at protecting tapirs. The inventory needs to include mammals, birds, herpetofauna, plants, and various other types of flora and fauna that have important conservation value.
