Trap Camera Recorded Two Tapirs in Mesuji, Habitat Protection Strengthened
Camera Trap Installed After Tapir Appears
Monitoring was carried out after a tapir (tapirus indicus) appeared in the Register 45 Sungai Buaya forest area, PT Silva Inhutani Lampung concession area, on July 1 2026.
The Wildlife Conflict Management Team then found tapir tracks on July 20 and 21 2026. These findings were followed up by installing two camera traps named SIL1 and SIL2 from July 20 to September 1 2026.
The camera installation was carried out to obtain information about the presence and activities of tapirs, habitat use, and their movement routes in the Mesuji area.
According to Agung, the discovery of two tapirs has important meaning for conservation because it shows that the company's forest areas and HCV areas still contain biodiversity that needs to be maintained.
However, the presence of animals in the concession area also faces a number of potential threats, ranging from habitat fragmentation and change, hunting, setting snares, to conflicts with the activities of surrounding communities.
“The discovery of this tapir is a momentum to strengthen the management of the HCV area of PT Silva Inhutani Lampung. "The existence of wild animals not only needs to be viewed as an object of monitoring, but also as an important part of the ecosystem whose ecological function must be protected and maintained," he said. said Agung.
