RDF Indah Kiat Serang Claimed to be Largest in Southeast Asia, Capacity 8,100 Tons per Day
The Paper Industry Still Depends on Imported Raw Materials
Hanif said that paper waste in Indonesia has great economic potential, but has not been utilized optimally.
Indonesia has around 113 paper industries with raw material requirements reaching 14 million tons per year. Around 7 million tons of this need is met by virgin pulp originating from industrial forest plantations, while the rest relies on waste paper.
However, according to Hanif, around 60 to 70 percent of the need for used paper is still met through imports.
“In fact, we have quite abundant potential for paper and plastic waste,” he said.
Therefore, he encouraged the government and companies, including Indah Kiat, to build a waste collection and sorting system so that used paper and plastic from within the country can be absorbed as industrial raw materials.
Third Phase RDF Begins Operations
Director of IKPP Serang Heppy Moiras said that the RDF facility that Hanif reviewed was a third stage unit with a larger capacity than the previous facility.
The unit has been operating in stages and is currently capable of absorbing around 6,000 tons of waste per day.
