Marconi Orangutan Observed with Second Child in Jantho Nature Reserve
BIG ACEH, GARISBUMI.com – The Marconi orangutan was observed with its second child in the Jantho Nature Reserve, Aceh. This finding is an important note for conservation efforts for rehabilitated orangutans who are able to survive and reproduce after returning to their natural habitat.
The Post Release Monitoring (PRM) Team at the Jantho Orangutan Reintroduction Center found Marconi while monitoring on Friday morning, October 2 2026. At that time, an adult orangutan and its cub were seen moving in a tree approaching the adaptation enclosure area.
After carrying out closer observations, the team confirmed that the adult orangutan was Marconi.
The child is estimated to be 2-3 years old, male, and appears healthy in physical condition. During observations, the Marconi cub began to actively move up the tree and was not always in its mother's arms.
Even though he was starting to develop independent movement skills, the orangutan child remained close to Marconi.
Returns to Breed After Release
Marconi underwent rehabilitation at the SOCP Sibolangit Orangutan Quarantine and Rehabilitation Center, North Sumatra, since 2009 before being released to the wild in Jantho in 2011. He was among the first group of orangutans to be released since the reintroduction program in the area began.
In 2017, Marconi was observed having his first child, named Masen. Now, after more than a decade of living in the Jantho forest, he is again being monitored with his second child.
