Makassar's waste has the potential to reach 541.93 tons a day, sorting from home is the focus
MAKASSAR, GARISBUMI.com – Makassar City's potential waste generation in October 2026 reaches 541.93 tons per day. Reducing and sorting waste from households is one of the steps being encouraged to reduce the handling burden at the Tamangapa Final Processing Site (TPA).
This figure was conveyed by the Chair of the Makassar City Environmental Council, Melinda Aksa Munafri, at the National Ecotheology Seminar at the Horison Hotel Makassar, Saturday (24/10/2026), based on information from the Makassar City Government.
The data in the presentation material notes that Makassar has a population of 1,482,800 people spread across 15 sub-districts, with an area of 175.77 square kilometers. The figure of 541.93 tonnes is the potential for waste generation, not information regarding the total amount of waste transported or entered the landfill.
Through material entitled "Sort waste from the source", Melinda emphasized three needs that must work together: reducing waste from the source, strengthening organic and inorganic waste management facilities, as well as community and cross-sector involvement.
Sorting waste and preparing for processing
The public is encouraged to separate waste into three categories, namely organic, inorganic and residue. This step needs to be accompanied by a reduction in single-use plastic and the habit of choosing products with more environmentally friendly packaging.
For household organic waste, a number of processing methods introduced include composters, stacked buckets, biopore holes and maggot cultivation. The selection can be adjusted to environmental conditions and the capabilities of each household.
This movement has a basis in the Instruction of the Mayor of Makassar Number 3 of 2026 concerning the Movement for Sorting and Processing Waste from Source.
