Ternate Book Landfill Fire Crashes, Residents Urge Compensation and Management Audit
Residents Request Landfill Audit and Investigation of Fire Cause
The community is urging a transparent audit and evaluation of the management of the Buku Deru-Deru TPA. The evaluation is requested to include the suitability of the landfill location close to residential areas as well as the waste management system, including the implementation of a sanitary landfill.
Before the fire, residents had complained about the smell from the landfill activity. The smoke that spread after the fire adds to concerns about the health of local communities.
Residents also asked the Ternate Police to investigate the cause of the fire. The city government emphasized that the cause of the incident cannot be concluded as natural factors or human actions without examination results and supporting evidence.
Another demand is to stop waste disposal activities at the Buku Deru-Deru landfill for an indefinite period. However, this step requires alternative waste management so as not to cause new problems.
Ternate City's waste volume is estimated to reach 90-100 tons per day. The government needs to consider the sustainability of waste services in determining policies on landfills.
Residents also asked the Ternate City DPRD to use the right of interpellation to ask the mayor and the head of the environmental service for an explanation regarding the fire and accountability for landfill management.
To oversee the follow-up to demands, the City Government asked the community to appoint three to five representatives. These representatives are expected to help communicate regarding loss data collection, treatment developments and TPA evaluation.
