Ternate Book Landfill Fire Crashes, Residents Urge Compensation and Management Audit
TERNATE, GARISBUMI.com – Residents affected by the Deru-Deru Book Final Processing Site (TPA) fire in Ternate City, North Maluku, are calling for a complete blackout, health services, and compensation for the losses they experienced. Residents also asked for a transparent audit of the management of the landfill located in Takome Village, West Ternate District.
This demand was discussed at a meeting between the Ternate City Government and the community at the Sulamadaha Village Multipurpose Building, Saturday (10/10/2026). The Deru-Deru Book Landfill fire occurred on October 3 2026 and still had smoke problems until the eighth day of treatment.
Ternate City Regional Secretary Rizal Marsaoly said that nine points of residents' demands would be followed up through technical steps, data collection on losses, and evaluation of landfill management.
"Today has entered the eighth day and we have been working since the first day. Of the nine points of demand, all of them will become material for study by the Ternate City Government," said Rizal.
The meeting was also attended by the Chairman of the Ternate City DPRD Rusdi A. Im and a number of heads of related regional organizations.
Around 70 Percent of the Affected Areas Have Been Treated
According to Rizal, around 70 percent of the areas affected by the fire have been handled based on monitoring in the field. However, smoke that still appears requires further treatment.
Rizal, who is also Chair of the Ternate City Land and Forest Fire Emergency Response Post, explained that handling landfill fires requires a special approach because it is related to piles of rubbish and methane gas.
