Surabaya City Government Directs KTS Within the City, from the Old City to the Mangrove Botanical Gardens
SURABAYA, GARISBUMI.com – The Surabaya City Government has directed state elementary schools (SD) and junior high schools (SMP) to optimize educational tourism and public spaces in the city as locations for Mid-Semester Activities (KTS). The choices are varied, starting from the Kota Lama area, the Mangrove Botanical Garden, to the Jeruk City Forest.
Head of the Surabaya City Education Department (Dispendik), Febrina Kusumawati, said that learning activities outside the classroom or outing class could be an opportunity for students to get to know the history, environment and potential of their own city.
"So there is indeed a curriculum called outing class or KTS. So, we suggest that in Surabaya there is no shortage of places to explore," said Febrina, Monday (19/10/2026).
According to him, schools do not have to take students outside the area to provide different learning experiences. Surabaya's various educational tourism destinations can be used to connect classroom lessons with conditions encountered directly.
The Kota Lama area, for example, can be a learning space to introduce students to history and the environment.
"For example, if you really want an outing class or KTS, we have several public spaces in Surabaya. There is an old city, you can use it as a learning area for children," he said.
Febrina explained that the Surabaya Education Department had instructed state elementary and middle schools to maximize the implementation of KTS in the city. To expand the choice of locations, his party is also collaborating with regional officials in the fields of agriculture and tourism.
