Batam Encourages Reducing Waste from Source, Abandoning Haul and Dispose of Patterns
BATAM, GARISBUMI.com – Waste management in Batam City is directed at prioritizing source reduction, sorting and recycling. The policy direction is contained in the Draft Regional Regulation (Ranperda) concerning Waste Management which was jointly approved by the DPRD and the Batam City Government, Wednesday (21/10/2026).
The draft clarifies the division of roles of regional governments, sub-districts, sub-districts, area managers, business actors and the community in handling waste. The development of waste banks and a circular economy were also included in the discussion.
Through this regulatory update, waste handling is encouraged to go beyond transportation and disposal to the final processing site (TPA).
"The policy orientation must shift from simply moving waste to reducing waste; from a collection, transport and disposal pattern to integrated management," stated the statement in the Special Committee (Pansus) report conveyed by its spokesperson, Suyanto.
According to the Special Committee, population growth, settlements, industry, trade and tourism add to the challenges of waste management in Batam. This condition is the reason for the need to update regulations which were previously regulated through Batam City Regional Regulation Number 11 of 2013.
Waste and Recycling Banks Become Part of Policy
Discussion of the Ranperda includes waste management based on regional characteristics, use of technology, development of waste banks, as well as involvement of the community and business world.
Utilizing waste into energy, strengthening institutions, collaborating with third parties, as well as monitoring and law enforcement are also part of the plan.
