Sumatran tigers in Pelalawan evacuated, BBKSDA Riau awaits DNA test results
PELALAWAN, GARISBUMI.com – Riau Natural Resources Conservation Center (BBKSDA) evacuated a Sumatran tiger from the location of negative interactions between humans and animals in Pelalawan Regency, Riau. The tiger is currently undergoing temporary observation and treatment at the Kasang Kulim Conservation Institute while waiting for the results of DNA testing.
This handling is a follow-up to the incident in July 2026 in one of the BPPH areas in the Kampar Peninsula landscape. BBKSDA Riau installed camera traps to monitor the presence of tigers around the location.
Head of BBKSDA Riau Technical Division, Ujang Holisudin, representing the Head of BBKSDA Riau, said monitoring results showed the tiger was still roaming around the scene. The team then installed a trap cage or box trap.
"To provide a sense of security and save individual tigers, boxtraps were installed," said Ujang.
On September 8, 2026, a Sumatran tiger entered the trap cage. Based on initial identification, the animal is thought to be an individual involved in the previous incident. However, this allegation still requires further investigation.
BBKSDA Riau has sent DNA samples to the Gadjah Mada University laboratory to support the identification process. The test results will be one of the bases for an in-depth study of the individual tiger.
