Sumatran Elephant Lisa Gives Birth in Tesso Nilo, Her Child Stands Up 20 Minutes After Birth
PELALAWAN, GARISBUMI.com – A male Sumatran elephant calf was born in Tesso Nilo National Park, Pelalawan Regency, Riau, Monday (28/9/2026) evening. The elephant calf from a mother named Lisa was able to stand on her own about 20 minutes after being born.
Lisa, a 45 year old assisted elephant, gave birth at around 19.00 WIB at Camp Elephant Flying Squad, Lubuk Kembang Bunga Village, Ukui District. According to the Ministry of Forestry, the mother and calf are safe.
The medical team's initial examination showed that the elephant calf weighed around 129 kilograms and was 96 centimeters tall. The team declared her healthy, but continued to monitor the mother's milk supply and the condition of Lisa and her child for 24 hours.
This birth was Lisa's sixth. The Ministry of Forestry said the elephant calf was born from Lisa's marriage to a wild elephant in the Tesso Nilo area.
Since Sunday (27/9), elephant handlers, veterinarians and animal nurses have been monitoring Lisa after seeing signs of approaching labor. Her movements began to slow down on Monday morning, before finally giving birth in the evening.
The Tesso Nilo National Park Office hopes that this birth will help strengthen attention to the conservation of Sumatran elephants. The elephant calf's survival now depends on initial care which the team continues to monitor, while habitat protection remains an important part of efforts to maintain the population.
