Church in Jambi Starts Waste Bank, Eight Parishes Prepare Ecological Action
JAMBI, GARISBUMI.com – The waste piggy bank or waste bank movement was inaugurated at the commemoration of World Food Day 2026 at the Jambi Dean's Level, Sunday (25/10/2026). This initiative, which is being encouraged to develop in every church in Jambi City, is aimed at getting used to sorting waste from home and reusing materials that are still useful.
This movement is part of an ecological agenda involving eight parishes in Jambi Province. Each parish has one year to implement and evaluate the program that has been prepared.
Head Pastor of St. Gregory the Great Jambi Parish, Felix Astana Atmaja, SCJ, said follow-up action was needed so that concern for the environment did not stop at commemoration activities.
"We are committed so that this movement does not stop with today's celebration. Each parish has processed and prepared follow-up plans to be implemented in their respective environments," he said.
The results of the implementation of the program will be reviewed at the commemoration of World Food Day the following year.
Waste Sorting Starts from Home
The peak of the activity took place in the Saint Gregory the Great Parish Catholic Church area, Kenali Asam Bawah Village, Kota Baru District, Jambi City. The series of events will be held on 23–25 October 2026, including seminars, ecological training, inter-parish meetings, and preparation of follow-up plans.
Jambi Mayor Maulana, who attended the activity, emphasized the importance of managing waste from the source. Steps being encouraged include sorting household waste, utilizing biopore holes, processing organic waste into fertilizer, and recycling inorganic waste.
