JAKARTA, GARISBUMI.com – The Ministry of Forestry is encouraging the younger generation to take a bigger role in the growth of the carbon economy and the transformation towards a green economy. Young people are not only expected to care about forests, but also master technology, innovation, research and green entrepreneurship.

These efforts are carried out through the Forest Conservation Generation Development Center (Pusgenri), one of which is by involving the younger generation in the 2026 Indonesian Responsible Business and IRBA Forum Meeting in Jakarta, Thursday (24/9/2026).

The 2026 IRBA Forum discussed the relationship between readiness to face carbon trading or carbon readiness, FOLU Net Sink targets 2030, Net Zero Emission 2060, green financing, innovation, human resource development, and multi-stakeholder collaboration.

This agenda brings together representatives of the government, business world, regulators, investors, financial institutions, academics, practitioners and the younger generation.

Head of Pusgenri Ministry of Forestry, Luckmi Purwandari, said the transformation towards a low-carbon economy requires young talent who understand environmental issues while being able to adapt to technological developments, innovation and the needs of the business world.

"It is not enough for the younger generation to just be recipients of information about changes towards a low-carbon economy. They need to be present as part of the ecosystem, build competence, expand networks, and find space to contribute through innovation and real action," said Luckmi.

New Opportunities in the Green Economy

According to Luckmi, the development of the green economy opens up more opportunities for the younger generation. They can develop capabilities in the fields of forest restoration, carbon measurement and monitoring, environmental technology and data, nature-based innovation, research, and green entrepreneurship.

Young people can also be involved in developing various solutions that link the interests of forest conservation with the needs of a low-carbon economy.

Therefore, the challenge faced is not only introducing the carbon issue to the younger generation. They also need to be equipped with knowledge, skills, networks and access to appropriate ecosystems.

In this forum, Pusgenri involved 10 Generations of Forest Conservationists or Genries who came from various backgrounds, ranging from environmental communities, foundations, universities, to schools.

Their involvement is part of the learning process as well as opening up access to building networks with various parties working in the sustainability ecosystem.

Through direct meetings with governments, corporations, investors, financial institutions, academics and practitioners, it is hoped that the younger generation will be able to understand the competencies needed, opportunities that are developing and forms of contribution that can be started now.

Preparing Forestry Green Talent

Pusgenri encourages the formation of a generation of forest conservationists to be increasingly connected to the needs of forestry development and green economic development.

This development must not stop at efforts to increase environmental awareness. Youth development programs need to be directed at strengthening competence, innovation, leadership and collaborative networks.

The growth of the carbon economy is considered to be a momentum to produce more young talents who are able to reconcile the interests of forest conservation with innovation and economic opportunities.

"We want the younger generation to see that protecting forests also requires knowledge, technology, creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship. This is where we must prepare green talent," said Luckmi.

According to him, green talent is not just a generation that cares about forests. They must also have the capacity to be directly involved in the future development of Indonesia's forestry.

Through Genries' involvement in cross-sector forums, the Ministry of Forestry seeks to open wider space so that the younger generation is closer to knowledge, networks, technology and the latest developments in the green economy.
