Before South Meruya TPS-3R operates, residents are asked to sort their waste from home
JAKARTA, GARISBUMI.com – The West Jakarta City Administration is strengthening waste sorting from the source before the pilot reduce, reuse, recycle (TPS-3R) based waste processing site in South Meruya starts operating.
West Jakarta Mayor Iin Mutmainnah visited residents' homes, schools and a number of neighborhoods in South Meruya Village, Kembangan District, door to door, Monday (28/9/2026).
The inspection was carried out at RT 09, RT 10, and RT 02/RW 02, SDN Meruya Selatan 03, SMPN 206 Jakarta, and RT 04/RW 09. This activity aims to ensure that the community in the TPS-3R service area has sorted waste from home.
"In order to prepare the pilot TPS-3R in South Meruya, we ensure that the four sub-districts within the reach of dumping waste at TPS-3R have sorted the waste," said Iin.
According to Iin, the ability of each community unit to sort and process waste still varies. A number of RWs have managed waste independently, while other areas still need gradual assistance.
Guidance is carried out together with city, sub-district, sub-district government officials and environmental elements. The RW management acts as a manager at the neighborhood level by involving the RT to invite the community to sort waste.
"For RWs that are still in process or preparation, we are providing coaching in stages from the city, sub-district and sub-district levels together with LH. RW as manager involves regional apparatus such as RT to invite the community to sort waste," he explained.
Citizens Need Concrete Examples
From the results of the inspection, Iin found that some residents did not understand the types of waste that had to be separated. Socialization, according to him, needs to be accompanied by concrete examples so that the message about waste sorting is easier to implement.
"Often we only mention organic waste, but don't give examples. For example, organic waste in the form of leaves and food waste. By giving examples, people will understand and get used to it more easily," he said.
Iin explained that people do not have to buy new containers to start sorting waste. Equipment that is already available at home, such as used food containers, cans, or unused buckets, can be used.
"There's no need to buy a new container. Just use an unused food container, can or bucket. One for kitchen waste and another for plastic," he said.
He also asked regional officials, Family Empowerment and Welfare (PKK) cadres, and Dasawisma to be actively involved in assisting residents. Sorting from the source is considered to be an important stage so that the waste entering TPS-3R can be processed optimally and not mixed again.
Involve Students in Supervising Waste Sorting
Apart from residential areas, Iin reviewed the implementation of waste sorting at SDN Meruya Selatan 03 and SMPN 206 Jakarta. The two schools were considered to have started sorting waste, but mixed waste was still found in the shelter.
He asked the school to form a special team involving students to supervise sorting while maintaining the cleanliness of the school environment.
"If students are involved and feel that their school is a home that must be kept clean, they will definitely be more willing to be invited and given appreciation," said Iin.
Iis (63), a resident of RT 10/RW 02 Meruya Selatan, admitted that he had been sorting rubbish at his house for a long time. He hopes that similar habits can be adopted by other residents.
"I have been sorting waste independently for a long time. Hopefully other residents can implement waste sorting from home," he said.
During the inspection, Iin was accompanied by Acting Assistant for West Jakarta Economy and Development Depika Romadi, Head of the Environmental Management Department Hermawan, Head of the Empowerment, Child Protection and Population Control Sub-department Dian Anggraini Susanthy, Head of Kembangan District Mochammad Fahmi Karsawijaya, Head of South Meruya Village Muhammad Maizar, and a number of community figures.
