Stop Trash Before Manggarai, Jakarta Will Install Filters in 11 Rivers
JAKARTA, GARISBUMI.com – The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government plans to expand the waste filter system to 11 rivers to reduce the burden of waste flowing into the floodgates. This step follows the management of Ciliwung River waste at the Simatupang TB Waste Filter (SSTBS) facility, South Jakarta.
DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said that handling river waste needs to be done before the waste accumulates downstream. Apart from filtering waste, the facility processes the collected material so that it can be reused.
"In particular, I want to see the waste that is handled from the end. Because this waste is handled from the end before it enters Manggarai," said Pramono when inspecting the SSTBS, Monday (5/10/2026).
According to Pramono, almost 30 percent of the waste that passes through the Ciliwung River is processed at the SSTBS facility. The collected waste is used as organic fertilizer and maggot feed media, while the residual waste is pressed to meet the needs of a number of nearby industries.
The processing results in the form of compost are also sent to the Organic Processing Center in Ciangir and Cilincing.
"So that waste handling is no longer partial, but more holistic and planned," he said.
Garbage Filters Will Be Developed in 11 Rivers
The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government will develop a similar system in Kali Sunter, Cipinang, Jatikramat, Baru Timur, Baru Barat, Angke, Grogol, Krukut, Buaran, Kalimalang and Cakung.
"We will develop treatment like this in 11 rivers in Jakarta. Jakarta currently has 13 rivers and one of them is this, the Ciliwung River," said Pramono.
The expansion of waste filters is part of Jakarta's waste management which connects handling from upstream to downstream. Pramono mentioned the SSTBS facility, a waste processing site using the principle of reduce, reuse, recycle (TPS 3R), as well as the Rorotan and Bantargebang refuse-derived fuel (RDF) facilities as supporting facilities.
He also emphasized the change in Jakarta's waste management pattern, from transport-dispose to sort-transport-process. This pattern refers to Governor's Instruction Number 5 of 2026 concerning Waste Sorting.
Through this pattern, waste is encouraged to be sorted and processed so that material that can still be used does not all end up at the final processing site.
