Indonesia in Pre-COP31 Fiji: Climate Action Must Be Real and Protect Vulnerable Groups
NADI, FIJI, GARISBUMI.com – Indonesia calls for global climate commitments to be realized through concrete steps that continue to protect vulnerable groups. Emission reduction and energy transition must go hand in hand with economic growth and poverty alleviation.
This message was conveyed by the Minister of the Environment/Head of the Environmental Control Agency (LH/Environmental Management Agency (BPLH)) Moh. Jumhur Hidayat at the Pre-COP Leader's Event in Nadi, Fiji, Tuesday (6/10/2026). Jumhur was present to represent the Indonesian Government on assignment from President Prabowo Subianto.
The meeting was part of preparations for the UN Climate Change Conference or COP31 in Antalya, Turkiye. The Pre-COP31 series took place in Fiji and Tuvalu on 5–9 October 2026, involving representatives from more than 50 countries and international organizations.
In his remarks, Jumhur emphasized the importance of translating the Paris Agreement into tangible results, especially when the opportunity to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius is increasingly narrowing.
"The Paris Agreement is our compass. However, when the space to maintain a temperature increase of 1.5 degrees Celsius is increasingly narrowing, our task is to bridge global commitments into real results, guided by justice and the principle of shared but differentiated responsibility according to the capabilities of each country," said Jumhur.
This principle places climate action as a shared responsibility, taking into account the differences in capabilities and conditions of each country.
