Concrete and Mangrove Combined to Prevent Abrasion in Sayung Demak
DEMAK, GARISBUMI.com – The Central Java Provincial Government is combining concrete construction and mangrove restoration to reduce the threat of abrasion in Surodadi Village, Sayung District, Demak Regency. The beach embankment with a hybrid sea wall approach of around 930 meters is targeted for completion on November 26 2026.
This development is aimed at reducing sea waves, reducing abrasion and tidal flooding, as well as supporting the growth of mangroves as natural coastal protectors.
Head of the Rivers, Dams and Beaches Division at the Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) Department of Central Java Province, Andis Setiyo Septiyantok, said that concrete construction functions to protect mangroves that are still growing from being hit by waves.
"These concrete buses are to withstand sea waves. Later mangroves will grow behind them, which are expected to be able to withstand sea waves, resist abrasion, and restore lost coastlines or land," he said, Tuesday (20/10/2026).
Protecting Mangroves, Helping Land Recovery
Andis explained that the work includes the main building which is around 700 meters long and the groyne building which is more than 200 meters long.
The hybrid sea wall approach combines coastal protection construction with coastal vegetation restoration. Once they grow large, mangroves are expected to become natural fortresses that help reduce waves.
"If only mangroves are planted, they automatically won't grow big. The hope is that this will act as a protection so that the mangroves can grow, and then become a natural protector for our beaches," he explained.
