PSEL Palembang Generates 21.55 MW of Electricity, Waste Processing Capacity of 1,100 Tons a Day
PALEMBANG, GARISBUMI.com – The Palembang Waste to Electrical Energy (PSEL) Processing Facility produces 21.55 megawatts (MW) of electrical power, of which 18.45 MW is connected to the PLN network. The facility with a processing capacity of up to 1,100 tons of waste per day is targeted to be inaugurated in December 2026.
Deputy Minister of the Environment/Deputy Head of the Environmental Control Agency (LH/Environmental Management Agency (BPLH)) Diaz Hendropriyono conveyed these achievements when reviewing PSEL operations in Palembang, South Sumatra (Sumsel), Wednesday (7/10/2026).
"Today we inspected the Palembang PSEL and I was amazed, happy and proud to see the progress of this PSEL, earlier it was said that it had produced 20 MW but it turns out it has been more than that at 21.55 MW and 18.45 MW has been connected to PLN," said Diaz.
Processing Capacity Assessed Capable of Handling Municipal Waste
Diaz assesses that PSEL Palembang's capacity has the potential to handle all of the city's daily waste generation. Processing waste into electricity is expected to help overcome the waste problem while providing an energy supply.
Before processing, waste is collected for three to five days to reduce its water content. The resulting leachate will also be processed.
"I see that Palembang seems to be able to use up all its waste with a PSEL with a capacity of 1,100 tons. The waste is also collected first for 3-5 days to reduce the water content and then the leachate will be processed," explained Diaz.
The processing capacity is the capability of the facility. Meanwhile, Diaz conveyed an assessment regarding the potential for handling all city waste based on field observations.
Use the Waste Processing Fee Scheme
In his statement, Diaz explained that PSEL Palembang uses the framework of Presidential Regulation Number 35 of 2018.
This facility applies payment of waste processing fees or tipping fees from the local government based on the tonnage of waste processed. The tariff for selling electricity to PLN is said to be 13.35 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh).
Diaz assesses that the infrastructure readiness and operational development of the facility supports the planned inauguration in December 2026.
"I think (PSEL) can produce good electrical energy for the people of Palembang. I think it is suitable and on track to be inaugurated in December 2026. I thank and appreciate the City Government for its support," he said.
According to KLH/Environmental Management Agency (BPLH), the presence of PSEL Palembang is expected to support the achievement of the national target of 100 percent waste management by 2029 as stated in the 2025–2029 RPJMN.
The inspection was also attended by the Mayor of Palembang, Ratu Dewa, Head of the South Sumatra (Sumsel) Province Environmental Service, Herdi Apriansyah, Expert Staff to the Minister for International Relations and Environmental Diplomacy, KLH/Environmental Management Agency (BPLH), Erik Teguh Primiantoro, and the manager of PSEL Palembang.
