Protecting the Coasts of Five Islands, Seribu Islands Prepares 105 Thousand Mangrove Seedlings
JAKARTA, GARISBUMI.com – Coastal protection and sustainability of fishermen's livelihoods are the targets for planting 105,000 mangrove seedlings in the Seribu Islands by November 2026. Residents will be involved from planting to maintenance, accompanied by regular monitoring and replacement of damaged or not growing seedlings well.
The Seribu Islands Water Resources (SDA) Sub-agency is preparing planting on Harapan Island, Kelapa Island, Kelapa Dua Island, Panggang Island, and Pramuka Island. Each island is allocated around 21,000 seeds.
Head of the Coastal Security and Development Section for the Seribu Islands SDA Sub-dept., Wahyu Maulana, said that mangroves are expected to help protect the island's land from abrasion.
"Planting mangroves is a natural effort to reduce abrasion, protect the island's land, and keep the coastal ecosystem healthy," he said, Monday (26/10/2026).
According to Wahyu, mangrove roots help hold sediment and reduce the impact of waves. The ecosystem is also a habitat for fish, shrimp and crabs, as well as playing a role in absorbing carbon.
"It is hoped that the existence of mangroves can protect the coastal environment, support the sustainability of fish resources, and provide long-term benefits for island communities," he said.
