Habitat Affected by Forest and Land Fires, Mama Man and Her Children Evacuated from Resident's Garden
PONTIANAK, 11 SEPTEMBER 2026, GARISBUMI.com – When their habitat was affected by forest and land fires, Mama Man and her children were found around residents' gardens in Sungai Awan Kiri Village, Muara Pawan District, Ketapang Regency, West Kalimantan (Kalbar).
Mama Man is a female orangutan who is estimated to be 20 years old. The child who was always with him, Man, was only about seven months old.
The public reported their whereabouts to officers. After conducting monitoring, the West Kalimantan (Kalbar) Natural Resources Conservation Center (KSDA) team together with the Indonesian Rehabilitation Nature Initiation Foundation (YIARI) confirmed that the area around the location no longer provided adequate forest cover.
The team then carried out an evacuation on September 3 2026. Mama Man and Man were successfully rescued and placed in temporary care at the YIARI Rehabilitation Center.
Both underwent medical examinations and treatment to ensure their physical condition and behavior were monitored. This treatment is carried out until the habitat conditions around the location are declared safe.
If the results of the examination and technical recommendations allow, Mama Man and Man will be considered for reintroduction to a suitable habitat.
Four Orangutans Found Around the Garden
A few days after Mama Man and Man's rescue, the team again received reports about the presence of orangutans around the community garden.
This time, the report came from Pemangkat Village, Simpang Hilir District, North Kayong Regency. Four individual orangutans were found in an area adjacent to a resident's garden.
The West Kalimantan (Kalbar) KSDA Center together with YIARI, the Palung Foundation, and the Pemangkat Village Forest Management Institute (LPHD) have been monitoring and searching since early morning.
On September 4 2026, the team succeeded in evacuating four orangutans named Noval, Nopan, Mamak Novi, and Novi.
The four were then placed in care at the YIARI Rehabilitation Center. They will undergo examination, treatment, rehabilitation and monitoring before determining the next treatment steps.
24 Animals Rescued from 18 Locations
The rescues in Ketapang and North Kayong are part of the wildlife protection operations carried out by the Ministry of Forestry during the forest and land fire season.
The West Kalimantan (Kalbar) KSDA Center recorded that 24 individual wild animals had been rescued from 18 locations in three districts from 1 August to 10 September 2026.
The animals evacuated consisted of 15 orangutans, six pangolins, one proboscis monkey, one lemur and one tenggalung civet.
The operation was carried out together with YIARI and a number of related parties. Apart from patrols, officers follow up on community reports regarding animals affected by fire, loss of habitat cover, or the potential to enter residential areas and residents' gardens.
The Ministry of Forestry considers public reports to have an important role in accelerating the rescue of wild animals. Without information from residents, animals affected by forest and land fires will be more difficult to find and handle.
The public is advised to immediately report the presence of wild animals affected by forest and land fires to officers. Residents are also asked not to catch, feed, move or approach animals without assistance because these actions can endanger humans and animals.
Wildlife rescue does not stop at evacuation. Health conditions, behavior, habitat readiness and technical recommendations will be the basis before animals are returned to nature.
