The fire on the surface of the Pasir Bajing landfill is extinguished, officers inject water to deal with the embers

GARUT, GARISBUMI.com – The flames on the surface of the pile of rubbish at Pasir Bajing landfill, Garut Regency, West Java, have been successfully extinguished. However, officers still have to deal with embers below the surface which are causing a number of points to emit smoke.

The joint team injects water into these points continuously, day and night. This step is the continued focus of handling fires at the final waste processing site in Sukaraja Village, Banyuresmi District.

In an online cross-agency coordination meeting, Saturday (17/10/2026), the Garut Regency Government reported that progress in handling the Pasir Bajing landfill fire had reached 90 percent. This figure represents the development of treatment during the evaluation.

Head of the Garut Regency Fire Department, Usep Basuki Eko, said that operations lasting about a week had succeeded in extinguishing the large blaze on the surface. The next challenge is to reach the remaining embers stuck in the pile of rubbish.

"Now there are only remaining spots of fire or smoke that are still emerging," said Usep, as quoted from the Garut Diskominfo statement.

According to him, this condition resembles a peat fire because embers are still stored below the surface. Therefore, the extinguishing was continued by injecting water into the parts that were still emitting smoke.

Apart from blackouts, security patrols are on standby for 10 days. After this period, periodic monitoring will be handed over to the Garut Regency Environmental Service (DLH) to ensure that the condition of the landfill remains under control.
