However, geological potential does not automatically mean that a reservoir is ready to be used as a carbon storage place. Its development requires studies of rock characteristics, storage capacity and safety, monitoring systems, CO₂ transportation networks, project economics, and regulatory certainty.

CCS development is also an option to reduce emissions from the industrial sector which is difficult to completely switch from fossil fuels in a short time.

PHE stated that the project was directed to support Indonesia's Net Zero Emissions target by 2060.
