Kupang Starts Water Conservation with Biopori, Encourages Movement in 51 Subdistricts
KUPANG, GARISBUMI.com – The Kupang City Government has started groundwater conservation action by creating six biopore points in the area of the Mayor's Office. This step is part of the Kupang Berair movement which is expected to develop in all 51 sub-districts through community involvement.
This action was carried out in a groundwater conservation implementation workshop held by PLAN International Indonesia together with the Kupang City Regional Development Planning Agency (Bappeda), Wednesday (30/9/2026).
Kupang City Secretariat Assistant for Economy and Development Ignasius Repelita Lega emphasized that conservation commitments must be followed by action in the field.
"This is a workshop about commitment. Commitment is not just about talking here, but must be implemented outside," said Ignasius.
According to him, the collaboration between the Kupang City Government and PLAN International Indonesia lasted for four years. Currently, this collaboration is entering its first year through the Smart Sustainable Water and Land Management (CERAH) program.
The CERAH program is directed at encouraging inclusive and sustainable water and land management. Making biopores is one form of implementation.
Biopores are vertical cylindrical holes in the soil to increase rainwater absorption while helping manage organic waste. Ignasius also installed the biopori as a marker for the start of the conservation action.
