Kendari Encourages Sorting from Home, Requests to Strengthen Waste Services
KENDARI, GARISBUMI.com โ Sorting waste from homes and improving waste services are two steps being encouraged by the Kendari City Government to overcome the accumulation of waste. Residents are invited to reduce single-use items, while regional officials are asked to deal consistently with areas prone to hoarding.
This direction was conveyed by Kendari Mayor Siska Karina Imran in written remarks read by Regional Secretary Amir Hasan at the Kendari City commemoration of World Cleanup Day 2026 at Pasar Baruga, Tuesday (27/10/2026).
According to Siska, waste that is not managed properly has the potential to pollute the environment, block drainage, trigger floods, and disrupt the health and comfort of residents. Handling requires daily habits that continue after the cleaning action is finished.
"World Cleanup Day is a reminder that maintaining cleanliness must become our daily habit, not just done during certain activities," said Siska in her speech.
Valuable Waste Distributed to Waste Bank
Residents are encouraged to get used to sorting organic and inorganic waste at home, schools, workplaces and public spaces. Reducing single-use items and reusing items that are still suitable is also part of this step.
Waste that has economic value can be channeled through waste banks or recycling activities. According to Siska, this utilization has the potential to reduce stockpiles while opening up economic opportunities for the community.
