Bromo Fire Widespread to Jemplang, Tourism Closed Totally and Water Bombing Deployed
MALANG, GARISBUMI.com – Forest and land fires in the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) area have not been successfully extinguished until Sunday, September 13 2026. The fire that first appeared in the Pengol Savana has now spread to the Jemplang Post area.
The Ministry of Forestry, together with a number of joint elements, continues to extinguish fires by land. The East Java Provincial Government also provided aerial firefighting support using the water bombing method.
For the safety of visitors and the smooth running of blackout operations, the TNBTS Center has completely closed Mount Bromo tourist visits from all entrances since Saturday, September 12 2026. The closure is valid until an undetermined time limit.
The fire was first discovered on Thursday, September 10 2026, at around 16.30 WIB, in the Pengol Savana area. The fire then developed and moved towards Mount Kursi.
The movement of the fire was divided into two directions, namely continuing to burn the Pengol area and spreading towards Mount Kursi. Officers together with a number of related elements immediately carried out the extinguishing by adapting to terrain conditions.
On Friday, September 11 2026, at around 18.30 WIB, officers succeeded in extinguishing the fire in the Pengol area which leads to Mount Bromo. Meanwhile, the fire that was moving towards Mount Kursi was not completely extinguished, but was successfully controlled.
Strong winds trigger the fire to grow again
Fire reappeared in the Pengol area on Saturday, September 12 2026. Strong winds caused the fire to grow again and spread until it reached the Jemplang Post at around 16.20 WIB.
As of Sunday, September 13 2026, officers were still trying to extinguish the fire. Conditions in the field continue to change so monitoring and control are carried out intensively.
The dry season makes vegetation in the Bromo area, especially grass, dry and flammable. Strong winds also increase the risk of the fire spreading to a wider area.
Thick smoke around the affected area also has the potential to reduce visibility, hamper the mobility of officers and make the extinguishing process difficult.
Hundreds of Joint Personnel Deployed
The Ministry of Forestry involved various elements in handling the Bromo fire, including TNBTS officers, Manggala Agni TNBTS, the Fire Concern Community, and 56 personnel from the Forestry Police Partner Society.
Apart from that, the extinguishing operation involved eight Manggala Agni BKSDA Bali personnel, eight Manggala Agni personnel from West Bali National Park, 15 personnel from the Jabalnusra Forest Fire Control Brigade, and 15 personnel from the Forestry Law Enforcement Agency.
Elements of the Regional Disaster Management Agency, TNI and Polri were also involved in handling the fire.
The fire extinguisher used two tankers to spray water into the fire area. The water supply to the location is supported by two patrol cars, two pickup trucks and one water truck.
Officers also extinguished them manually and mechanically using gepyoks, jet shooters and engine blowers. This method is used to reach locations that are difficult for fire vehicles to pass and have limited water sources.
Blackout operations were also strengthened through water bombing from the East Java Provincial Government. Air extinguishing was carried out to help control fires in areas that were difficult for ground teams to reach.
Mount Bromo Tourism is Totally Closed
The TNBTS Center will close all tourist access to Mount Bromo starting September 12 2026. There is no certainty about when the tourist area will reopen.
The closure aims to protect visitor safety while ensuring that officer mobility and firefighting operations are not disrupted by tourist activities.
The Ministry of Forestry appealed to the public and tourists not to approach the fire location. The public is also asked to follow developments in information through the official channels of the TNBTS Center.
Even though visits to Mount Bromo are closed, tourist activities to Ranu Regulo can still be carried out in accordance with applicable regulations.
The Ministry of Forestry together with all joint elements will continue to monitor the progress of the fire and provide the latest information based on conditions in the field.
