SLEMAN, GARISBUMI.com – Waste management businesses require a sustainable supply of raw materials and markets to be able to survive. The Ministry of the Environment/Environmental Control Agency (KLH/Environmental Management Agency (BPLH)) encourages strengthening cooperation between business actors, buyers of processed products, communities and the government to connect the entire waste management chain.

This encouragement was conveyed at the Business Networking Luncheon at the closing of the Scaling Up Local Enterprise on Waste Management in Indonesia (SULE-WM) program in Sleman, Special Region of Yogyakarta, Wednesday (7/10/2026).

This forum brought together dozens of participants from government, business actors, environmental communities, final buyers or off-takers, as well as the hotel, restaurant and cafe sectors. Educational institutions, research institutions and business partners are also involved in exploring collaboration.

Head of the Java Environmental Control Center, Eduward Hutapea, said that waste management requires connectivity from sorting to marketing of processing results.

"Collaboration like this is important because waste management requires interconnected chains, starting from sorting, collection, processing to market. When the government, business world, community and society move in one ecosystem, waste management is not only an environmental issue, but can also open up sustainable economic opportunities," said Eduward.

Connect Waste Sorting with the Market

According to Eduward, the success of waste management efforts depends on a balance between environmental benefits and economic feasibility. It is hoped that the utilization of marketable waste will also reduce the burden on the final processing site (TPA).

Therefore, cooperation between parties needs to provide guaranteed supply of raw materials, support processing processes, and open market access.

"What we are building is not just business transactions, but an ecosystem. There is certainty of raw materials, there is a processing process, there is a market, and there are environmental benefits that must be protected together," he said.

This connection is an important part of developing a circular economy, by preserving materials so they can be reused and reducing waste that ends up in landfill.

Business Networking Encouraged to Become Real Collaboration

Director of PERSADA Langgeng Makmur (PLM), Bernadetta Widiandayani, said that the end of the SULE-WM program needed to be followed by continued cooperation in the field. The network that has been formed is expected to be able to strengthen waste management efforts.

"We want this activity not to stop as a program closing ceremony. What is more important is how the network that has been formed can continue to develop into real cooperation, open markets, strengthen supply chains, and make waste management efforts more sustainable," explained Widiandayani.

In this forum, PLM explained the journey and achievements of the SULE-WM program. The activity continued with discussions and meetings between participants to explore partnership opportunities.

Participants involved included UD Rajin Magelang, PT Sumber Barokah Sleman, Bowo Rosok Bantul, Hotel 101 Tugu Yogyakarta, and Hotel 101 Style Yogyakarta. The forum also involves educational institutions, waste processing sites using the principles of reducing, reusing and recycling (TPS3R), waste banks, communities and local governments.

KLH/Environmental Management Agency (BPLH) hopes that this network will become the foundation for waste management businesses that are independent and have sustainable market access. Cross-sector collaboration is expected to strengthen the implementation of a circular economy while maintaining the environmental benefits of business activities.
